During the 1914-1918 War, York contained the Headquarters, Northern Command, the York Record Office; the Depot of the West Yorkshire Regiment and four auxiliary hospitals.
York Cemetery contains 152 First World War burials and 85 from the
Second World War. The cemetery has become very overgrown. However, despite
this all the CWGC plots are carefully maintained with, where necessary, mown
paths to provide access.
There are three family memorials to soldiers of the Yorkshire Regiment.

Acomb.
11th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, attached to the 2nd Battalion Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Elizabeth Acomb, of 3, South Parade, York. Killed 21 August 1916. Aged 23. In Loving Memory / of

April 1920. Aged 41. Born York, Resided York. Son of Thomas Henry and Harriet Ann Fletcher. Husband of Irene Fletcher of 12 Stafford Place, Holgate Rd, York. Enlisted 25 November 1915. Discharged 30 March 1919, with eyesight impaired by enemy gas. |

is commemorated on a family headstone. However, the headstone is only marked by a sunken kerb. |

Other data states 31406 Yorkshire Regiment before transferring to the 22nd Battalion Labour Corps. Brother of Mr. S. Halliwell, of 66, Ambrose St., York. Died 29 September 1917. Aged 41. Born Halifax (Yorks), Enlisted York. Buried AEROPLANE CEMETERY. Paul Clarke of the Imperial War Museum's Register of War Memorials website has photographed the sunken kerb and provided information on James Percy Halliwell's family background. |

Private Henry Outhwaite.
35503. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment, formerly served with the West Yorkshire Regiment (62395). Killed 8 May 1918. (Not shown in SDGW) Had previously served in the 5th and 11th Battalions West Yorkhsire Regiment. From the Register of Soldier's effects, his estate was left to his mother Henrietta. From the 1911 census, Henry Outhwaite was born in 1900 in York and was living in York. Therefore aged 18 when killed. Commemorated Panel 52 to 54 and 162A, TYNE COT MEMORIAL. In Loving Memory of
